My Passions
Contemporary Music
Recently Crystal has taken great interest in Contemporary Music and is very passionate about celebrating local composers and exploring the flute in unconventional ways. She had the opportunity to play various pieces from local Canadian composers and also meet with some them, such as Robert Aitken, experience that brings even more excitement and unique perspective into playing a contemporary piece.
Brazilian Music
Crystal has always found herself drawn to Brazilian music and all national composers and groups. Ranging from the more academic music of Villa-Lobos to the percussion rich "Chorinhos" that are so traditional in social events. Classical music has always borrowed elements from folk music and vice versa, and adventuring into both worlds can help paint a more complete picture of Brazilian music, its European and African origins, and deepen our understanding of our own culture.
The Orchestra
The flute has a very special role in the orchestra, it is often the instrument that evokes the ethereal, magical, celestial and in Operas and programmatic pieces it often represents forests, birds, fairies and nymphs. Evidently the flute possesses a range that shines way beyond these elements, which is what makes it such a beautiful and popular instrument in so many different music genres.
Teaching
Crystal has been teaching music for 15 years and is always researching more ways to help her students improve their practicing habits and succeed in their music endeavors. Often, in parallel with learning the instrument, music theory and and rhythm training are also explored in class as these are part of a basic foundation when it comes to playing any instrument.
With Crystal as an instructor, students progress greatly while enjoying the process of learning music and discovering their hidden abilities and artistic potential!
Music connecting people
Music is a temporal art, so playing at your community orchestra, going to concerts, getting together with friends for a Jam session, playing at a wedding or graduation ceremony, all of those are examples of how music can bring people together, how it can transform your community and help keeping music alive
